Weather Shield Roofing, is a low slope roofing contractor based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. We do all re-roof, we don’t do any new construction. We have a great company that we’re really proud of.

We weren’t able to get the applicant flow that we were looking for and find people who fit us right. So we have a consultant that we work with on the roofing side that referred us to Core Matters. Our goal was to get our process in place for hiring, recruiting, and finding employees so that we had a system that made sense. That’s what we were looking to do.

The way Core Matters helped coach us through the process was really good. We appreciated that and I would say that course content along with the coaching put us in a position to have success through the whole process and helped us kind of get our systems in place. Core Matters pushed us on a lot of things that we needed to make some tough decisions on, and they were instrumental in that process for us.

We’ve had a number of impacts that Core Matters has helped us with. Choosing an automatic tracking system so that we have a process that doesn’t weigh heavily on our HR person. She’s able to get her job done and feel good about it, not feeling overwhelmed every day. We rewrote all of our job descriptions. All of that is tied into our core values and our beliefs. What we’ve seen is we’re starting to attract people who fit us, not just necessarily those who are looking for a job. I think one of the things they talk about was really hitting the passive job seeker. We do feel like we’re striking that cord in the marketplace right now, which is awesome.

Our end results have backed up the promises that were made upfront. That being said, we had to work our tails off to get there.

Took a lot of effort on our part to make that happen. Someone who would fit Core Matters would be a company like us that says, “We’ve never really had a process in place. We need to figure out a way to do this and play with bigger companies in the marketplace so we feel we can compete with them successfully”.

For people who are out there now, they need to be ready to implement and they need to be ready to really evaluate who they are, and what they are in their own business, so that the people they attract are the people that they want.

We’ve had 110 applicants, we’ve made five hires so far, and we have a number of others pending. So the results that we’ve experienced are real, tangible, and are making a difference in our company every day.

Core Matters helped us evaluate what we needed to do to get it right, and hiring has become a strength of ours, where it was a weakness before.
