I’m Ashley at UrbanCore Construction. We are a general contractor based out of Richmond, Virginia, specializing in low-income housing tax credit, new construction developments in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.

For the past 10 years, we’ve kind of just been going off of good judgment and word of mouth to attract and retain talent and kind of was seeing that that wasn’t going to work anymore if we wanted to keep growing larger.

We wanted to create a system for the way that we hire, one that could have more streamlined results and could help us attract and retain the best talent in our industry.

As a general contractor, we subcontract all of our labor out. So we’re actually not really recruiting for skilled trades, but more so management level positions like superintendents, project managers, assistant project managers, assistant superintendents. So people that work in the construction industry, but are able to have that kind of high level management skill set.

Prior to working with Ryan, we really didn’t have a lot of education on the best ways to go about attracting talent in our industry in this day and age. So working with him provided us with a huge amount of tools that we could learn and then apply to our business and our industry to improve the way we do things.

We used to kind of struggle to have a lot of applicants coming in. We were relying on word of mouth and now we have more qualified applicants coming to try and work for us than we have open positions for.

Ryan and his team are super prompt, so they’re always willing to help you. It seems like they really care about our success, not only in using their system, but just our success as a business. And if we ever have something that we need help with, they’re willing to either direct us to the resource they already have or even develop new tools or resources for us to help us with our specific problems.

We were surprised by the sheer amount of tools and resources they have. We didn’t really have a knowledge of what all is out there in terms of how to improve your hiring or different ways to do that. And they had just a wealth of resources. So that was surprising and really useful.
