Enhance Property Maintenance

"I say over and over, consider the value of attaching a nuclear reactor to your recruiting system. Core Matters was 100% the solution."

Hi, my name is Rick McFadden. I’m the president of Enhanced Property Maintenance. We’re located in Colorado. We service Douglas County and the Colorado Springs metro area. We play between the homeowner and the general contractor.

Our purpose is to enhance homes through repairs and upgrades. I came out of corporate. I was in corporate America, Fortune 500, for 20 years. I’ve hired probably over 300 people over the years. I thought I was pretty good.

But what I found owning Enhance for the last six years is our turnover rate was about 50%. Plus, I give about $300 in uniforms to a new guy. The wrong guys can turn off customers. They can break things. I’ve had that happen. I had a guy break a $700 electric range on his second day.

So my challenge was, how do I change what we’re doing?

How do I improve our recruiting and retention?

A coach I respect, Randy Stanbury with Four Level Coach, produces a weekly email newsletter, and he had a feature on Core Matters. I binge Core Matters on podcasts on a Sunday afternoon, order his book, schedule a discovery call, and my life changed.

What’s impressed me about Core Matters is the system, the systematic approach to hiring. We start with our values, vision, purpose. Then we translate that into branding. Then we take that to market. Our job recs reflect that. In all my reading and all my years, I’ve never seen anything like it.

Ryan and Core Matters has helped me flush out our values. We have core values, but it’s difficult to get it on paper. Without knowing the core values, how do you brand yourself? How do you market yourself to top talent? Core Matters dials it in. They’ve done it hundreds of times. What would have probably taken me 18 or 24 months to get dialed in, Core Matters had me dialed in in days. This is totally different than anything I’ve ever seen. It’s a completely different mindset.

Core Matters has a model of doing cultural and position interviews. They last like 90 to 120 minutes. When Core Matters first presented that to me, I literally said, I don’t feel comfortable with that. That doesn’t seem right. That’s too much, too long. Yet I have grown men, tradesmen, stand up at the end and go, I’ve never done anything like that. That was awesome.

We’re getting so many more candidates that we are able to pick and choose the folks we want. And it’s even to the point where they’re coming to us wanting to refer friends so that friends can be part of this.

I say over and over, consider the value of attaching a nuclear reactor to your recruiting system. Core Matters was 100% the solution.
