Mr. Electric of San Antonio

"Core Matters has helped us to have the passive candidate keep an eye on us and then reach out. It's been really successful!"

Hire electrician

My name is Matt Bruhn. I’m the owner along with my wife – of Mr. Electric of San Antonio, Austin, Round Rock and San Marcos. We span from south of San Antonio to north of Austin.

We do primarily residential electrical service. So, what that means is if someone needs a ceiling fan hung or they have an issue at their property with their power, they’ll call us and we’ll come out to their house in a van, with a licensed electrician and we’ll take care of their needs.

One of the challenges that we face, is getting skilled tradespeople with customer service skills.

We were introduced to Core Matters by our franchiser Neighborly, and they suggested we get together with them.

The thing that we were looking for Core Matters to help us with, being able to not only find the right folks who have the technical skills and the soft skills, the customer service skills. But also, the right mentality and the right attitude to really help us build a team.

In talking to them, it was very clear that they could help us in many different ways.

You know, it wasn’t just recruiting, it wasn’t just job templates, it was kind of holistic. Like, how do we need to change as a company to attract the type of people that we want to hire, and will stay here for a long time?

The fact that they helped us understand that it was much bigger than creating a pipeline. It was about bringing and welcoming the people into your team that you want to have long term, and helping us articulate what we’re really about.

It helped us understand that Core Matters was the right partner for us.

They helped us with our story. To the folks that we’re recruiting, how does that interact with the story that we have for our customers, and helping us understand that those two things needed to work together.

They helped us get clear about what our values are, what we’re about, what we’re not about, and how to articulate that so that we attracted the right candidates, and maybe scared away the wrong candidates just a little bit.

They also helped us put together a structure so that instead of me as the owner, spending all my time recruiting and really a lot of it falling to me, it helped me build the processes to structure it in a way that I have many other people on our team now, actively participating in the recruitment process, the interviewing and the hiring, so that we are more than just one person.

They just bring a tremendous amount of energy. They’re very responsive, so you shoot ’em an email and you’ll get a response back quickly.

Their website is really well structured. So if you want to go in to self-serve, and you want to find information, you know, early in the morning or late at night, you’re able to access that.

If there’s something you can’t answer for yourself or find it readily, you just shoot ’em a note and then they engage.

I really found the coaching sessions to be helpful. I could bring my specific issues to them and get a direct response, and not only the response but maybe two or three other solutions or ideas that quickly let me get redirected and become productive.

Again, if you’re a business owner and you’re looking to get your team really clear about who they’re trying to recruit, and then being successful at getting them to say “yes”, Core Matters would be a great investment for you.

It’s a significant amount of time and energy, obviously there’s payment involved as well, and you want to make sure that you have the time and energy that you can allot to it. And if you do, the reward will be great.

One thing that Core Matters did for us, is really help us improve our website that we use for recruiting, get videos out there, and material that helped us attract the right teammates versus just using a job ad.

What that’s allowed us to do, is allow that passive candidate to keep an eye on us from afar, and when they see what they’re looking for, to reach out to us. That’s been really successful.

If what you’re doing today is not working for you, and you’re looking for a partner to help you figure out why that is and give you another path (and a successful path), Core Matters will be a great partner for you.
