My name is Scott Goddard. I own Goddard Consulting. We’re an ecological services company based in Massachusetts. We primarily provide services to property owners, developers, investors, and other private entities seeking to perform land use projects in and around ecologically sensitive areas that need to navigate complicated environmental regulations in New England.
We have hundreds and hundreds of active projects. Many, many clients, good long-term repeat clients and getting new ones every day. So we needed a plan to scale the staffing, but also to do it in a way that allowed the proper training and leadership to happen so that the quality of service didn’t drop off at the same time while scaling. So it brings my pool of potential hires a bit smaller. So we had to learn how to navigate that and that’s where Ryan started coming in.
When I felt like the wheels were a bit coming off in organizing the company about a year ago, I was introduced to a book, “Hire Better People Faster.” I read it cover to cover. I read this and I said, “I need to be doing this to bring the right people into this company.”
I looked up Ryan through his book and tracked down Core Matters. We decided to hire them. He helped us very quickly put in systems and processes to make sure that the people we were onboarding were a much better culture fit to the company. To date all the people that we brought in, which in fact kind of doubled our company size, none of them have been problematic. None of them have left. We haven’t had to fire anybody. We haven’t had disciplinary issues with anybody. It’s maybe not perfect. You know, we’re still learning, but there’s a largely successful culture fit with all the new hires. Way better than what I was doing before which was more or less like “Hey, I kind of like you. I have a seat that needs someone in it. So come on over. We’ll give it a try.” That does not work.
I could not imagine getting to the point we are today without his help. It for sure wouldn’t have happened as well or as fast. I would recommend Ryan without hesitation to anybody else in this situation. And I have done so.
As the sole owner of a growing small business, the burdens that I was carrying for so many years were mounting and over spilling. What Core Matters has done for me, it has lifted a lot of that rain cloud of responsibility by learning better how to trust my staff to train, to bring in the right staff that I can have a much quicker level of confidence with where we stand today versus four months ago.
I’ll tell you that the seemingly large step is actually quite a small step, but it’s a step that makes all the difference in the world and it has made a huge difference for me. And I imagine it could for many other companies that are in my situation – a small company, you know, Ryan’s kind of the guy for this.
