“Core Matters gave us guidance and materials and was available to help us work through the process whenever we needed them.”

– Randy Reed

We’re a technology service provider called TeamLogic IT. We provide it support for small and medium-sized businesses. A simple way to put it is we’re like an outsourced I.T. department for them.

All of my employees are customer-facing. Finding IT technicians and engineers that also can speak a language and communicate well enough is a big challenge.

Ryan and I were on a board together for a nonprofit. I didn’t know much about his business, but as we got together, and talked more, I found out that he knew a lot. When I talked about the challenges that I faced, he talked about how he could help. They worked with you on a weekly basis, which is nice, and then they provide some additional coaching. One of our goals when I started working with Ryan is to make sure that we hired not only for skills, but we hired people that fit our business culture.

The challenge was working to find those good employees and have a good process that’s repeatable. What I learned through the corporate hiring system is how to recruit. I had never thought of looking at recruiting myself, and I’ve paid recruiters in the past, and the challenge I’ve always had is these recruiters would find people that fit the basic skills that we gave them and a job description, but they didn’t really fit our culture. I always interviewed in the past, like I was trying to sell my company, but Ryan taught me that we should be interviewing in such a way the applicant should be selling us. He’d created the workflow for our hiring process as opposed to it being just on me. Now I have others involved in the process, so I’m hiring for a cultural fit, but I have our general manager who’s focused on leading our service and support team that’s looking at technical skills.

To have a workflow around that and to know who’s involved in each step of the process, to me provides you know, a great advantage. By the end of the year, we had four positions we had to fill within two months. We filled all those positions and they were quality people. You know, if my skin’s not in the game, then the process isn’t going to work. So I knew right up front that I had to invest in that time. Ryan was very upfront and communicated well about the time investment that I had to put in. He was always available to help when we were working through a process.

When we worked on our cultural fit and our values, the nice thing is he gave us material, questionnaires, whatever we needed, and guidance to do that. Of course, I had to go back and do the work, but he was available to help work through that process. The most impressive thing about Ryan is his strive, how he’s passionate about what he does. That’s inspiring, you know, to have somebody that they really care about that what they do. But not only does he care about that, he cares about how I do. Nobody knows your business better than you.

So if you’re having challenges with recruiting, give Core Matters a call. They will teach you how to recruit the right people. TeamLogic IT
