From Apprentice to Visionary: Powering the Future of Construction

What does it take to lead a construction business that thrives for generations? For Michael Carey Jr., it starts with vision, strategy, and a whole lot of hands-on experience.

Michael didn’t just step into a leadership role. He earned it. Growing up in his family’s electrical business, he worked his way through the ranks, picking up both technical skills and business acumen. Since buying the company with his wife in 2014, he’s helped turn Carey Electric into a forward-thinking design-build powerhouse in Upstate New York.

But Carey Electric isn’t just surviving; it’s innovating. Through standardization of procedures, smart use of construction technology, and a commitment to training, the company stands out in a crowded market. Curious how that all comes together?

Michael breaks down how design-build projects streamline workflows and improve results by involving contractors early in the design process. This saves clients time, reduces costs, and allows for higher quality outcomes. More importantly, it gives Carey Electric the ability to engineer the job with the people who actually install the systems in mind.

But perhaps the biggest advantage? Standardized, repeatable systems. Carey Electric simplifies tasks like underground wiring and lighting controls so technicians can focus on craftsmanship. This makes onboarding easier and boosts labor efficiency.

Michael also shares one of his proudest achievements: a 260,000 square-foot medical facility that involved years of design and build collaboration. It’s a perfect example of what thoughtful design and teamwork can do in construction.

Yet Michael knows that none of this is sustainable without new talent. That’s why Carey Electric actively partners with local schools, attends career fairs, and promotes the trades as a rewarding career path. They’ve even built a 2,000-square-foot training center to ensure their staff never stops learning.
