Coaching Spotlight: When the Obvious Answer Isn’t the Right Answer
Sometimes, what seems like the obvious answer to a problem isn’t always the best option.
One of our clients recently reached out for help. They had appointed a new team member to handle administrative tasks. Although new to the role, this person quickly proved to be exceptional. In just a few days, she had not only completed extensive training but also tackled several critical tasks with remarkable efficiency. Despite her impressive capabilities, there was one area where she lacked experience: HR.
The company, with only about two dozen employees, had always managed HR internally, juggling the tasks between various roles. The solution seemed obvious:
Hire a dedicated HR person.
However, this plan wasn’t working out. They had already cycled through a couple of HR hires, none of which had met their needs, leaving the team scrambling.
During a coaching session, we explored a different perspective. Instead of hiring another generalist HR person, what about splitting the responsibilities, but this time with a twist. The financial and compliance-related tasks could be handled by someone proficient in those technical areas, such as their financial person. The people-focused elements of HR – recruiting, onboarding, employee engagement, and training – could be assigned to someone who would truly excel in those areas.
The conversation immediately steered toward the new team member, who was perfect for the employee experience side of the job duties despite her lack of formal HR training. Her business background, quick learning ability, and proactive approach made her the right candidate.
The owner was on board immediately.
This new approach of splitting the HR tasks was logical and played to the strengths of the existing team members. No more rotating HR duties around the office. A clear, thoughtful plan was ready to be implemented.
While this solution wasn’t the obvious answer to their problem, it became clear that dividing the HR tasks according to specific strengths and responsibilities made the most sense for their company.
Sometimes, stepping back and looking at the problem from a different angle reveals a more effective and efficient solution. This can significantly improve how a team functions, improving productivity and employee satisfaction!
